#3 | The Change Scam
Nope, this one is not about the one guy in the street offering you to exchange money at a tremendous exchange rate. The change scam – also known as the silent bar scam – is an invention by bartenders who due to their profession are naturally hindered from leaving the counter and scamming people in the streets at night. Here is how it goes down:
- You order a drink
- You get your drink handed to you and reach out your hand for your change
- Done!
That’s all there is to it. The dubious creatures working the counter will simply withhold your cash and then put on a measly act as if they “forgot” about it. There really is not much subtlety to this one. You might see some award-like acting skills, though, as they have year-long practise in how to play it dumb.
Where does it happen?
The silent bar scam is a specialty of Eastern Europe with an equal popularity in Asia (China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia)
How To Avoid It:
You will need to give the apron wearing thieves the full Gaylord Focker-treatment in order to get your money back.
